All great inventions begin as a humble idea, so to become an inventor, you need to have ideas. Every single person in the whole world have ideas, they come popping right in every now and then. Since people around the globe have these ideas popping in all the time, why aren’t they inventors? Yes you need ideas, but ideas alone that lie dormant inside your head cannot automatically make one an inventor. But how did Porsche become such as well known and highly sought after luxury brand of cars? Did the Porsche Panamera bring the name into the big league alone? So get all your spreadsheets ready because we will be looking at how Porsche redefined luxury forever.
Form meets function.
The word of the day is Horological. Horology is the study of the measurement of time.
Luxury car brands are known for collaborating with watch makers to release high quality watches that take inspiration from cars. But Porsche is one of the few companies that seriously dived into horology.
They have completely reshaped the landscape of the watch industry. How did they do this you might ask? By joining both function and form. This is the design philosophy of Bauhaus. They say that an object’s form cannot be separated from the object’s function and this applies the other way around also.
Ferdinand couldn’t just settle for making cars alone. He wanted to take his design skills to the next level.
He left his family business to pursue his dream and that’s when he established Porsche Design. And what is his first product you may ask? His first product was a wrist watch.
Nobody was wearing or even cared about black wrist watch way back in 1972. Ferdinand was looking around and saw that the traditional leather or gold wristwatches were somewhat lacking something. Thus his first creation, a black steel faced wristwatch that featured a bracelet and it was a hit.

He did not think about giving it some sort of fancy name. He called his wristwatch the Chronograph. It was inspired by airplane gauges.
You should be able to tell the time with just a quick glance on an analogue watch. The black face of the watch coupled with its white markers made this much easier to do.
The design was amazing and timeless. The watch is still a modern design today as so it did 40 years ago.
